Happy are the Peacemakers

Matthew 5:9; By nature we will produce conflict and sin, but God, the Ultimate Peacemaker, calls us to be peacemakers. Conflict can be a great opportunity to strengthen relationships and display Jesus. Peace overflows into actions - sometimes it even means fighting for peace. The passion of a peacemaker is to lift up Jesus.

Matthew 5:8; Psalm 24; A pure heart has no pretence, and has a single focus - Christ. The pace, pressures and pleasures of this world and of our lives can prevent us from stopping and focusing on Christ, the only one who can satisfy and purify our hearts.

Matthew 5:7; Ephesians 2:1-7; If we see our sin lightly, our saviour will be small and we'll see others sin as massive. True mercy results in action and is balm for the cancer of bitterness in relationships. God loves us, not because of our merit, but because of his great mercy. Showing mercy is evidence that we have received mercy. Mercy doesn't mean 1, Dismissing sin, 2. enabling sin or 3. condoning sin.

Happy are the Sad

Matthew 5:4; Confronting the sin in our lives is a devastating experience; we usually prefer to shift the blame to someone else. When we truly see our brokenness and need of a saviour we will mourn for our sin, mourn for the church's sins and failures, and mourn for our fallen world. Those who mourn shall be comforted. The path to true joy in Christ is through mourning for sin. One day there will be no more mourning.

Matthew 5:1-12; The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus teaching his disciples how to live the beautiful life. Until you realise that you are broken and lacking and that Christ is your soul's satisfaction, you will not be truly happy. Cast yourself on Jesus. The Beautiful Life is lived out in daily brokenness, saying, "All I have is Christ" and knowing that one day he will make all things perfect.

1 Peter 1:13-19; Remember to be ready for action, actively obedient in his Word, continually growing in him; our aim is to be holy in all we do while living on the edge. Salvation is not a one way ticket to heaven but more like conscription into God’s army. There are no sitters only goers or senders in the greatest commission of all time. How can you make your life count for Christ?

1 Peter 5:1-5; The church belongs to Christ - he is the head, he is preeminent (Colossians 1:18). We need reminding to love one another (Romans 13:9-10), to love the truth (2 Corinthians 4:1-2), to seek reconciliation appropriately (Matthew 5:22ff, 18:15ff), to submit to our leaders (Hebrews 13:17), to pray for their protection (1 Peter 5:8).
