LEAF Motor: Spin-Up

This is the very first spin-up test of the Less Epic Axial Flux (LEAF) motor, to about 1500rpm. The LEAF motor is a "DIY" coreless axial-flux brushless motor. More information. The LEAF motor is the end result of a cheap set of wedge magnets that I bought. They're for "building efficient and powerful wind generators," but I was pretty sure I could make a motor out of them instead. In this video, it's getting a jump-start from a Battlebot weapon system. This controller is sensorless, so it needs a running start with this much inertia. The next test will be with full sinusoidal control and rotor position sensing.

This video shows a significant difference between square-wave commutated and sine-wave commutated brushless motor drive. The motor (from the B.W.D. Scooter project, can resonate with the scooter frame at certain speeds when driven with ordinary six-step control. Sine-wave control greatly reduces this resonance by taking out high frequency harmonics of the drive signal.

The B.W.D. Scooter is an electric kick scooter with Both Wheels Driven by custom-built brushless DC hub motors. For more information, visit: http://web.mit.edu/first/scooter The hub motors built into each wheel are 3-phase, 14-pole brushless outrunners; the inside of the motor is stationary and the outside spins. The design is based heavily on Charles Guan's Project RazEr. Each motor is made of stacks of thin, laser cut steel laminations donated by Proto Laminations. They are direct-drive, so there is no need for chain or belt, but a practical consequence of this is an inherent 1:1 gear ratio. To get a lot of torque with no gear reduction, we chose to use two motors and strong NdFeB magnets.

B.W.D. Scooter Custom BLDC Motor - Speed Test
This is a speed test of the B.W.D. scooter's first ...
This is a speed test of the B.W.D. scooter's first custom-built hub motor. The scooter is this year's Edgerton Center Summer Engineering Workshop project. B.W.D. stands for either "both wheel drive" or "brushless wheel drive," since the Razor-style scooter will have two integrated BLDC hub motors. The hub motor is built from scratch using laser-cut steel laminations donated by Proto Laminations. It has 12 slots and 14 neodymium block magnets (see LRK winding motors). The inspiration came from Charles Guan's Project RazEr. The scooter motor has a Kv of approximately 47 RPM/V, which is quite low. This means more torque and less speed than a typical BLDC motor, which might be used to power an model aircraft propeller. For a scooter, the more torque, the better!

Fast-forward to 1:50 to see it spinning! This is test #1 of the B.W.D. Scooter's first custom-built motor. This test was at 36V. The first 1:50 is us trying to find the right permutation of phases, since the motor is electronically commutated based on signals from hall effect sensors. The next step is to add tread and...oh yeah...build the scooter.

Custom Brushless Motor Controller Testing

I've taken my recent experiments in 3-phase motor control hardware and put it into a nicer package. The controller is 100x80x30mm, not including the fan, built with IRFB3207 MOSFETs, which can handle quite a lot of current as demonstrated by the electric go-kart controller from last summer. (100A for a 3-phase inverter? Just a guess. This was only a 20A warm-up test, and the heating was negligible.) Cheap brushless controllers for RC planes are ultracompact already, but this is designed more for small electric vehicles. It can do full torque control, including regenerative braking, by regulating current instead of voltage or speed. As always, wireless programming and data acquisition comes standard. The controller will be used in a Razor-style scooter with a brushless hub motor, coming soon from the Edgerton Center Summer Engineering Workshop team.

Quick demo of a custom 3-phase AC induction motor controller I made for a term project. It lets you set synchronous speed and then observe DC and AC voltage/current sensors at different operating points. If you know me, you know it's only a matter of time before this gets scaled up.....
